[This is written by Alycia but it is supposed to represent Caden’s perspective. We started the day at a retreat in Miango. Somehow it didn’t make it onto the website until November…oops]
Today is my 2nd birthday- I don’t know what that means, but everyone kept wishing me a “Happy Birthday” so it must be a good thing!

6:30 I am awake. I’m not in my own bed so I cry out for my mommy. Here she comes…yeah! Wait, she takes me in to their room (it’s not their normal room either). She puts me on their bed. Daddy and Mommy want to sleep longer but not me, I am ready to play!
6:45 Mommy changes my pants…they are very wet so I am glad for dry ones. Then she gives me my juice…I love having juice in the morning!!
7:00 I am playing with my cars and motorcycle. I want to go outside but mommy and daddy won’t let me…they are so mean sometimes…they just want to stay in and do things. They keep putting all my things in bags.
7:30 We finally go outside!! A guy comes out of the door next to ours and sings me a song…it’s that “Happy Birthday” phrase. It’s a nice song but I just want to run! I run over to Noah’s room. He is outside with a box of army men. We take handfuls of army men and put them on the porch. I like to pick different colors of army men out of the box.
8:00 We take a long walk. At some point Daddy picks me up…I guess I am walking too slow. But there are so many things to see and do: red rocks to pick up, trees to look at, catapillars to find…how can they expect me not to stop along the way.
8:05 We are in the big room where we eat but I just want to be outside! Let me go out please! I try to sneak away but Daddy catches me.
8:15 Oh…I am hungry…I am eating…eggs! I love eggs! Mommy also gives me some toast but I don’t want it so I throw it on her plate.
8:30 I give mommy my plate. I am done eating. I want down NOW…did you hear me? I want to get down NOW so I can play!
9:00 We are back in our room. Mommy and Daddy are still putting things into bags and then taking the bags to the car. I just want to be outside. Please, won’t someone let me go outside? I try to sneak out the door but mommy makes it so it won’t open. Oh, just let me out!
10:00 Mommy takes me back to the big room where we eat but no one is there. So, we go OUTSIDE! Yeah! Oh no, mommy leaves me with a lady who I’ve been with a few times this weekend. Don’t go Mom! Mom, don’t go. If I cry, maybe they’ll take me to her.
10:15 Sure enough, the crying works and I am now with Daddy and Mommy. People are singing. I don’t want to sing, I just want to play. Mommy leaves but I’m with Daddy so all is good.
10:20 Juice!! Crackers!! I can handle this…my car, my motorcycle…life is good!
10:30 Won’t someone let me go so I can walk around? Oh, this is good, I can go upstairs! No, there is a man blocking the way. I just want to go upstairs.
10:45 I’ve had enough. If I’m loud they will take me outside. Mom, Mom, Mom, I want to go outside! Dad gets up, here we go! I win, I win, I win!
11:00 Oh…one of the big kids left their bike outside…I want to ride it. No, daddy says “no”…but I want to …waaaaahhhhh, I cry. But this time it doesn’t work!
12:00 We are back in the big room where we eat and I am hungry. Feed me! Mommy gets me chicken but mine isn’t too good. Her’s looks better. Can I sit in your lap, mom? Thanks…your chicken is better! Yum!
1:00 We are outside again! Yeah!! But they want me to walk faster…I just want to play. The big kids are playing ball…can’t I join them?
1:45 I climb into the car to get in my seat.
1:50 Oh…I’m tired…. [asleep]
3:30 I’m awake and ready to get out of the car. Oh, I see our gate…yeah, we are home! Where is Stephanie? There she is! Where are the boys? I am ready to play, play, play.
4:00 Mommy is in the kitchen doing something and daddy is in the living room doing something…they are both too busy for me. Daddy…Daddy…play with me. What’s this, he wants me to take something to mommy? I can do that? More daddy, give me more to take! A book, a piece of cardboard, another book, what else can I take her?
4:15 I’m hungry. There are chips in that bowl up there…can I reach it? Yes! Mommy didn’t see me…I’m going to take this bowl with me. I made it all the way to our apartment! Let’s see, can I open it? I’m trying… oops! All the chips just fell out of the bowl and onto the floor. Oh…if I step on them they make a fun sound…crunch, crunch, crunch!
4:17 Daddy figures out what I am doing…he wants me to clean it up but I just want to play. Hey, wait a minute, where are we going? It’s not fair that they can just pick me up and move me whenever they want! My room? I don’t want to be in my room!
4:20 O.K. I’ll clean up the chips…just let me out! Thanks, dad.
5:30 Outside! We are outside! David, Stephanie and I are walking around in the backyard. Look at all the flowers. They smell so good! Oh, there is a board up there I can pick up….I’ll run up the hill and get it. Look at this piece of wood…it’s like a sword…I’m going to get Hansol with it. I love being outside.
5:45 I climb into the van to get into my seat. Where are we going?
6:00 We get out of the car and go into a place where we sometime eat. I get to sit in a really tall chair here. But I don’t want to be in the chair. I am hungry…won’t someone feed me?
6:30 Finally, some food! I stuff French fries and fish in my mouth…yum! How much can I get into my mouth?
7:30 We are back at home and my friend Noah has come over, as well as his brother, sisters, mom and dad. A few other people are here too. Mom sits me in my chair and gives me all these things wrapped in pretty paper! They put a box with on the table…wait, MeeMaw and PawPaw! I can see them…and they are talking to me and smiling. How cool is that!
7:45 Mom brings this colorful, yummy looking cake over. Then she uses this stick to put a flickering light on another stick. I try to touch the light…ouch, that’s hot! My friends all gather and they sing that song again. Then, they tell me to blow but I don’t know what they mean. All of sudden I feel everyone around me blowing and the hot flicker is gone. Finally, they cut me a piece of the cake and I stuff it in my mouth! Yum!!!
8:30 I am so tired. Finally I get to crawl into my bed and sleep.

12:30 AM I am just now heading to bed….one of our girl’s is having friends sleep over to celebrate her birthday. We just turned the generator off and are headed to bed.
7:00 AM Caden actually slept in a little bit! Now, it’s time to get up and start our day.
7:30 AM After doing the dishes and playing with Caden for a bit I make muffins for the girls for breakfast…tried a new recipe, Chocolate Cappucino muffins…they look good!
8:30 AM Toby, Caden and I enjoy muffins. Yummy! I turn the generator on and start some laundry (and coffee!). I learned that it takes 6 buckets of water to fill our large washing machine. I dry some clothes, iron, fill the washer for rinse cycle, fold clothes, dry more, fill the water again (wait, 2 rinse cycles? I must have chosen the wrong setting..no wonder this has taken over an hour so far!)
9:00 AM Toby and Caden go into town to do some shopping (when I say “go into town” it seems like it is a distance from where we live…in reality it’s only about 7 minutes away…about as far as it was from our house in TX to the rec center…so not far at all).
9:30 AM The girls are up and enjoying their muffins…I remind them to save a couple for the guys.
10:00 AM Start my 2nd load of wash…this time I use speed setting and I have the buckets pre-filled and ready to go!
10:15 AM A tailor comes over to measure us for outfits. A family gave us 12 yards of fabric as a thank you gift. I call Toby to tell him to come home as he and Caden are getting outfits too.
11:00 AM The laundry is hanging out on the line so I turn off the generator and work on putting cloth diapers together.
12:30 PM Lunch…tomato basil soup, grilled cheese sandwiches…not quite La Madeleine’s…need to work on recipe.
1:00 PM Electricity is on…all of us pile into our living room to go online and watch the Princess Bride which is on TV… uh-oh…It’s raining! Stephanie and I run out to get the wash off the line…the rain only lasts a few minutes.
2:30 PM Stephanie and I go to the market to look for fabric. We are quick, it only takes us 30 minutes! This is great as the day is hot and the market is CROWDED! On the way home we stop at a fast food place for coke floats…we buy 2 ice creams and one coke to make our own. We sit and enjoy our floats and conversation.
4:00 PM We stop at a shop to look at an ironing board and all of a sudden it pours down rain!
5:00 PM I begin getting dinner ready…PIZZA! We found some flat bread that has seasoning on it and we want to try it for the pizza.
6:00 PM We sit down to enjoy our pizza. David’s family joins us. The pizza’s are incredible! They remind me of Campisi’s….thin crispy crust, lots of toppings!
8:30PM Toby finally gets his slingbox to work and is sitting watching the TCU game (go Frogs!) while the ladies and I watch a movie on our “big screen” wall (ok…watch is a relative term as the ladies are on their computers the entire time).
9:15 PM The movie we chose is TERRIBLE…switch to the new version on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Toby still watching football.
9:30 PM Neighbors come over to check out the game, they have never seen or heard of such a device.
11:00 PM Heading to bed finally. Toby stays up to watch more football…
11:30 PM I am just getting to sleep when the dog starts barking! She barks for over a half hour! |

What a busy day!!! This is a long one so I applaud you if you make it all the way!
6:00 AM Awake and ready for the day. Electricity, coffee, devotional…here I go.
8:00 AM Our cook arrives to prepare for hot lunch. We sell a Hot Lunch once a week at the school as a fundraiser. Today is BBQ pork! We also have to prepare for a birthday party tonight.
8:15 AM Caden and I go outside to cut flowers for the party. He has fun pulling leaves off of plants. I cut all sorts of flowers including roses! I have enough for 3 arrangements…beautiful.
9:00 AM Putting cake together for Steph’s birthday….cake, then frosting, then strawberry jam, then cake, repeat…add crumb coat…will need more frosting for the outside layer.
10:00 AM Frosting cupcakes for Hot Lunch. The cupcakes taste funny…Seem a bit moldy…throw out 40 cupcakes and make 2 cakes. Bummer!
10:30 AM Not enough powdered sugar so I am making German chocolate cake frosting in our kitchen. Our cook is busy baking cakes and rolls for lunch so the main kitchen is crowded!
10:40 AM While making the frosting, one of our students Aunt’s stops by unexpectantly to check up on the student. Have to be rude and keep stirring frosting so we chat in the kitchen. I tell her the student is doing well. She leaves.
11:00 AM Mix up dough for biscotti…I’ve never made it before but we are having a “coffee bar” of sorts at the party so I think biscotti will be fun.
11:30 AM Cakes are cool enough to frost…one white, one German chocolate…yum!
11:40 AM Pack up for Hot Lunch…drive to school
12:00 PM Lunch is set up…praise God for no rain! Kids and teachers start to come. We serve lunch until after
12:30...more people show up than expected but luckily we have plenty of food! We make more than the price of a tank of gas for the generator…which is good as electricity has been sparse and we’ve been using the gen more than usual.
1:15 PM Get home and continue working on things for the party. Toby takes Caden out to visit the TH guys at Camp.
1:30 PM Our cook reminds me that I need to bake the biscotti, so I put them in for the first round of baking.
3:00 PM Stop to rest for a bit as I know I will be up very late tonight. Steph has invited 11 girls to spend the night!
3:15 pm Our neighbor, Missy, starts bringing over things for Nathaniel. Nathaniel is their foster baby. He is 2 months old. They are going to Abuja for their anniversary so we are taking care of Nathaniel for the weekend.
4:00 PM Continue setting up for party. Table cloth on the table, flowers out, chairs re-arranged. Put biscotti dough in the oven for the 2nd round of baking.
4:15 PM A student texts saying he is ready to be picked up from school. Cookies are in the oven so I try to call Toby to go and get him…Toby finally gets message. I forget about biscotti and the get a little burnt…but they still taste OK.
4:30 PM Decorate cake…the pink is brighter than I expected but purple flowers look really good. The icing makes a huge mess…how do cake decorators not get covered in icing?
5:30 PM Toby picks up the rest of the students, I put the pizza’s in the oven.
6:15 PM Eat dinner and finish decorating for party…snacks- check, cake – check, koolaid- check, pumice stones – check (we are having someone come to do pedicures), espresso machine- check (a former house parent left one behind)
7:00 PM Our neighbor Zoe comes over to serve as our “barista”. Zoe worked at Starbucks so she knows her stuff. I enjoy sampling her practice round! She brings Nathaniel with her. He is so cute!
7:15 PM Steph’s friends start arriving as do the ladies who will do pedicures. Zoe starts mixing up coffee beverages.
7:30 PM The party is in full swing. Girls are getting pampered, coffee drinks are being enjoyed (by the guys, too)…we did a “coffee sampling”- served small cups of 3 different coffee drinks: vanilla latte, caramel macchiato (made with butterscotch extract) with biscotti, and iced peppermint mocha (it was supposed to be a Frappe but there wasn’t enough ice). The girls enjoyed chips and salsa, popcorn, rice and chicken, cookies and of course cake. They laughed and talked and laughed some more. The guys watched a scary movie in our apartment. Caden stayed up too late. We all had too much coffee and we all had a ton of fun.
8:00 PM Caden falls asleep on the couch so Toby puts him and Nathaniel to bed
11:00 PM The girls go downstairs for their “slumber party”. Zoe and another friend help me clean up (THANK YOU!!!)
12:00 AM Toby and I sit down to watch some TV…we’ve had too much coffee and sugar to go to bed.
1:00 AM We are ready for bed…. Nathaniel is hungry!
1:30 AM We finally crawl into bed and crash…until 5:30 when Nathaniel wakes up. By the time he is done eating, Caden is awake so there is no going back to bed for me.
6:00 AM Electricity…coffee…ready for the day. |

On July 4th we went to a Nigerian wedding of Dr. Koreand Katherine. Dr. Kore is a professor at JETS (Jos Evangelical Theological Seminary). His first wife passed away a few years ago and now he is married to Katherine. It was quite an experience.
10:30 The hostel staff arrived at the hostel so we could all ride together in one of our vans. Dr. Kore lives on our compound so we had all been invited to come, but for a Nigerian wedding you do not have to be invited to something to go. In fact, the term “wedding crasher” does not exist here since everyone is welcome!
10:45 We loaded up the van and departed for the wedding. As we were walking into the chapel photographers were snapping our pictures. We assumed this was for the Bride and Groom but we later found out that these photographers are not invited by the Bride and Groom, they just show up, take pictures, and sell them to guest’s during the reception.
11 ish We arrived in time to sit in the back- which was great since we knew Caden would not be able to sit for the entire service. His “kaka” (grandma) sat with us to help with him (her name is Asabe but for respect we call her Kaka…she helps us with housekeeping and with Caden a few days a week…he loves her and even said “Kaka” for the first time the other day!) We never asked her to help with Caden as this was not a work day for her, but she insisted…he’s her “grandson” so of course she will help. The wedding was quite different from Western weddings in many ways. For one thing, the Bride entered to a very upbeat song…in fact, I didn’t even realize she was entering until we all stood up as she passed by. Then, rather than standing up for the entire wedding, the Bride and Groom sat on the front pew unless they were participating in something.
The order of the wedding was similar to ours but the solemnization (“I do/I do…I know pronounce you…kiss) was in the middle! Then, before they signed the certificate, they had many of the JETS pastors come up to pray and after the prayer they all posed for a photo…in the middle of the wedding. Throughout the entire ceremony photographers were right up at the front taking pictures…and only one of the photographers was hired by the Bride and Groom…the rest were the same freelance photographers (and videographers) who had been outside. There were at least 8 of them!
The ceremony lasted about an hour. Toby had to take Caden out after about 20 minutes…he played with his friend Noah outside. People kept coming and going throughout the entire ceremony so we were constantly scooting to and fro to make room. By the end of the service there were so many people that it was standing room only!
After the reception everyone piled out of the church. As we were going through the doors people were handing out bags with favors. I don’t know what was in all the bags but I know some had the Jesus film in them and mine had an artificial plant.
12 ish We walked across the yard to the reception. 4 large tents had been set up with chairs beneath. Then there was a smaller tent in front for the Bride, Groom and family. We had been told that the reception would probably be long and it would take a while for food to be served. It was suggested we bring sandwiches. So, Toby stopped at the van and collected the bag of sandwiches, water, and fruit that I had prepared. While waiting for the reception to begin we nibbled on PB&J.
The reception actually began quickly. It consisted of a few people speaking, a little dancing, a prayer, and cake cutting. Throughout all of this people were passing out boxes of Jollofrice and soda. Fortunately I had brought our sandwiches because they ran out before getting to us. The photographers did find us so that we could purchase our photos. We bought a few of them.
2:30 The reception was over ….very short by Nigerian standards. So, we piled back into the van and headed home. Always funny to be a Bature (white man) driving a van load of Nigerian’s, got a ton of strange looks. Caden was so tired! He crashed as soon as he got in his car seat. What fun it was to experience this with our workers. Apparently, we still haven’t experienced the typical, traditional Nigerian wedding…we’ll look forward to it another time.
4:00 Our friend John called to invite us to a 4th of July cookout. Caden was still napping so we said we’d come a little late.
5:30 We get to the pool where the cook-out was to be (or so we thought). The weather was getting bad so we hadn’t taken our suits…which was good as we arrived everyone departed to go to the school to have the cookout.
6:30 We enjoyed some great burgers and hot dogs (they were bought in town at a meat shop that is run by a German fellow). Funny thing is we had a Canadian and a British fella cooking the food for us. It was fun to enjoy some time outside, playing Frisbee, watching the kids run around, chasing Caden, and hanging out. It was also nice to celebrate our country’s Independence Day…granted, half the people at the cook-out were not even American.
7:30 We arrived home in time to set up the projector for the team that was staying at the hostel. Once that was set up we had a little time to talk with family.
10:30 We crawled in to bed…exhausted from a fun-filled day! |

6:45am Woke up. Happy Birthday to me! Also Happy Fathers Day as well. 7:00 Got ready for church. 7:30 Alycia asks me to join in the search for a diaper Caden had taken off minutes earlier. A poopy diaper, again that he took off and left somewhere in the house. 7:45 We leave for church. 9:45 Church is over and we hang out in the parking lot with another family from our compound. They have 4 children. Which being baturi (in Hausa this means “White man”) the crowds of young Nigerian kids around had grown. They love the little Baturi boys like Caden with blond hair and blue eyes. 10 Got home and am waiting for my birthday luncheon with our neighbors and a Nigerian family we have been getting to know. 10:15-11:45 Worked on this and another article for our website. 12:15 Our friends the Camiola’s, from our compound, arrive for lunch. Alycia is awesome. She paid for a guy to come in and cook Sesame Chicken for my Birthday meal. We have not had any Chinese food since we have arrived so I was craving Sesame Chick for a while. 12:35 Our language teacher arrived as well. We have gotten to know them and have become friends of ours as well. A great family. (See photo to the right to see everyone.) What a great lunch with awesome guests. We sat around and chatted for a long time while all of the kiddo’s (7 in total) ran around the Hostel having fun.
3:45 Left our house to go to the Jos State Prison for their Chapel service. John Camiola, one of our guest’s was going to share his testimony to the prisoners. It also gave me an idea of where Alycia is starting to do ministry once a week with Missy Camiola. They have gone a few times already to minister to the ladies of the prison. 4pm We arrived to the prison and hung around just inside of the gate waiting to be let in. 4:20 or so we were let into the prison yard to go into the Chapel within the prison grounds. It is a Catholic Chapel, even though I am thinking since this service was so late in the afternoon they have multiple services throughout the day. 4:30 Service began. Wow what an awesome testimony John had to share with the prisoners. We have heard many of the stories before but to be able to put them altogether is great. What a story he has to share and especially to the prisoners. 5:30 The service finished with a raucous song. What great enthusiasm these prisoners have for Christ their risen Savior. We left the prison ground soon after and hung outside for a short while. The ladies took a few gifts to the female prisoners and guards. It was great to hear our Nigerian friends reaction to the experience of the prison. He was moved from the testimony and never thought he would have ever gone into the prison. Even though his brother worked there up to one month ago. 6:11 or so we got home and thanked our guests for the awesome day we experienced together. Our Nigerian friends have been so helpful in our learning of the Nigerian life and culture. What a great time we have shared so far. 6:35pm Had some left over pizza from a week or so ago and enjoyed that very much. Pizza is a true treat here. 7:10pm Put the boy down to bed. A boy who had not napped all day so he was a very tired young man. 7:30pm We put the projector we just bought from my brother to good use. We sat down and watched Invincible on the wall in our own little movie theater. Good movie and better yet, a great theater when you realize we are still in Africa.
“Ahhh, this is the way to wrap up daddies day. Caden sleeping on my chest.” |
